Winter glass

12_23_16b

When I grow up in Japan, there was no AC system in the ordinary house. I do not think they still do not have those like US. People wear many sweaters and thick socks in winter, and use the sectional heater instead of warming up the entire house. I still remember when  I woke up middle of the night, I saw my breath turned into the white mist. Of course I was in my bed. In hot summer, since we can not take off all clothing, people try to control the environment without those incredible AC. I mean that they make the house appear to be cool. They use the white lacy fabrics for the decoration. The goldfish motifs are used for many things. The plates for the dinner are replaced with transparent glass dishes. Why I am writing these reminiscence is that I thought about my glass wind charm. The one I used to hung was the small transparent and very delicate round shape with goldfish patterns on it. Just looking at it make me cool.

When I saw the glass bottles I just finished painting, these are definitely winter glass. It is very strange that one painting bring me back to my childhood memory.

Winter day

12_19_16b

Woke up in the morning, I made a pot of coffee and started to paint this image. It was very quiet day. I heard that it will be cold tonight. I filled up the bird feeder and watched many birds visiting our backyard through the window. I am debating myself either start reading a new book or painting new one. I love the lazy winter day.

Winter vacation

12_18_16c

School is over. Ye ye!! But unfortunately I caught cold and do not feel like singing yet. At least I finished this painting for Christmas. I pick several images for next paintings so that I can start some image today. That is good.

It was so cold past few nights, but it is sunny and wonderful today. Many African violets and Christmas cactus are blooming in the sunny window. Inside of my studio is almost spring like.

December

12_6_musician

I have been away from drawing and painting for a while. I read a lot of history books and enjoyed the past. Now December is here. I am totally rejuvenated and ready to start painting again. It is kind of nice not think about what I usually do and do something what I usually don’t.

Watercolor is not one of my favorite media. It is very not forgiven medum for me. Since I love to fix the image as the picture develops, it is frustrating for me to plan the process beforehand. But I tried something new, which is this image. I am sure that I can keep adding the values, but I need to stop for my sanity together. Now I am going to paint with acrylic….flowers or something transparent. I am really back.

St. Philip’s Episcopal Church

9_27_16c

I am reading and learning the history of Charleston, SC. Its history is quite interesting. But the more I read about books and articles, the more I feel about the real people lived there. What we see there are the remains of what people achieved as well as the evidence what they went through. People come and go. But when I closed my eye and stand at one of those old street corners, I almost hear the voices from the past and see the people in old fashioned clothes smiling at me. I forget where I am, past or present. Does it matter?

October Twilight

9_23_26

Sometimes making up the image is quite fun. Especially after you worked on very detailed realistic images. Pick up a charcoal pencil and start applying the marks. After I finished the drawing, I decided to make a painting out of this image. It is raining outside, it will be great to spend all afternoon painting from my imagination.

Illustration for the Children’s book

9_15_16

This is an illustration piece. I think that this image is good for a children’s book, like “Grandmother goes to the downtown”. The way I paint which is tight and details oriented is good for story telling. Unfortunately I do not have much experience on sequential image making, but the challenge is always good. I’ve gotten many books and enjoy reading from those lecture books to comics. There are so many unbelievably good artists and they are sharing their knowledge and works for people like me who wants to learn. Wonderful!

Gold Leaf

9_12_16-b

I found an image I like to paint. Then I decided to do a preliminary drawing which I do quite often. When I looked into the pencil box, I found some charcoal pencils, a white and two brown conte crayon..so …I used them.  Because of the brown paper I pick for this image, I needed to use white to create the lighter side of the values. It turned out to be very chalky. I guess that I totally forgot about how to use white.

Then I remember one impressive drawing done by a very young artist in the magazine. Unfortunately I forgot her name..sorry. She applied the gold leaf to her graphite and carbon pencil drawing on coffee dyed paper. It was very beautiful. Of course I needed to do this gold leaf drawing myself.

9_16_16a

I applied the gold leaf on the upper side of the tree trunks. Of course I dyed my paper with my morning coffee. My goodness, the gold leaf and the glue to attach them to the paper surface were hard to deal with when I drew. The gold leaf was also flat. I even could not finish this image. I was wondering why I started to do such a frustrating thing. I should just paint and forget about the gold leaf.

I must be a nut! I tried one more time.

9_18_16-c

This time I used the commercialy made brown paper with charcoal pencils, a carbon pencil, and the gold leaf. The carbon pencil is so soft and rather sticky compare with the charcoal pencils, it covers the smooth gold leaf. This is slightly better than the first try, but there need to be more adjustments, such as the process itself. I might have to glue the gold leaf after adding the values. Also paper can be white. Oh! I do not know. I am going to paint today.

Fine day in Holodeck

9_5_16-a

I really love to go out and paint the nature instead of looking at a photograph. But when I think about the equipments, heat, people, and uncomfortable way of painting, I just sigh. In Star Trek there was a incredible virtual reality called the Holodeck. I want to be in this illusion. I can sit in my chair and coffee in my hand, and paint. Am I getting lazier?
